No Discount Water for Data Centres:
Big Tech is aggressively expanding its footprint, and data centres are already popping up right in our backyards – like the massive Stack TOR01 facility in Scarborough. To keep their servers cool, these complexes guzzle millions of litres of our municipal water supply.
But here is the catch: these multi-billion-dollar corporations can actually pay a lower water rate than you do.
It’s called the Block 2 water rate. The city offers this steep discount to massive industrial consumers under the assumption that they will stimulate our economy and create jobs for locals. But data centres don’t operate like traditional factories. They run on heavy automation, sending their massive profits straight to Silicon Valley while providing next to no long-term employment for Torontonians.

A Call to cut the Data Centre Discount on Water:
Immediately reform the Block 2 Industrial Water Rate Program to include a strict, mandatory local job-creation requirement for data centres and tech infrastructure.
Stop subsidizing Silicon Valley profits with Toronto’s natural resources.
