We need a Plan for Public Seating:
“Street Furniture” is mentioned in the city’s design guidelines, but it’s considered a measure for “comfort” and not prioritized as an accessibility measure. From streetcar and bus stops, to parks and public places – there’s simply not enough places to sit.
Activists have been calling attention to this for years. It’s time for a dedicated seating strategy for this City – with standards for accessibility in every neighbourhood. We want everyone to be able to live in this city without depending on a car. We also want a city where people want to hang out in parks like this one.

A Call for an Official Public Seating Plan:
There isn’t always somewhere to sit. In Toronto, about a fifth of us have disabilities, and a sixth of us are seniors. For everyone else, a lack of public seating still means fewer places to relax, socialize, or enjoy the city.
There are policy reasons for this. An Auditor General’s report of the parks department found that service requests related to benches and other furniture were delayed 44% of the time.
